STI Awareness: How Often Should You Really Be Getting Tested?

By Cornelia Postma

Let’s talk about STI awareness, that is something that doesn’t always make it to group chats or brunch tables, but absolutely should—STI testing. Whether you’re in a committed relationship, dating casually, or exploring your sexuality, regular STI screening is one of the most powerful ways to take charge of your sexual health. And no—it’s not just for “when something feels off.” Testing is self-love, full stop.

Why STI Testing Matters More Than You Think

STIs can be sneaky. Many of the most common ones—like chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and even HIV—often show no symptoms at all. You might feel perfectly fine and still be carrying something that could affect your fertility, your immune system, or your partner’s health down the line.

The World Health Organization estimates that more than 1 million STIs are acquired globally every day—the majority of them going undetected.

Knowing your status isn’t just about protection—it’s about peace of mind, empowerment, and keeping your future options open.

How Often Should You Get Tested?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here’s a quick guide based on your lifestyle:

1. If you’re under 25 and sexually active

  • Test at least once a year for chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
  • Younger adults are more likely to contract STIs, even without symptoms.

2. If you have new or multiple partners

  • Test every 3 to 6 months—especially for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, chlamydia, and gonorrhoea.
  • The more exposure, the higher the risk—simple as that.

3. If you’re in a long-term monogamous relationship

  • Get tested together at the beginning, then based on any changes or concerns.
  • It’s about starting fresh—and staying accountable together.

4. If you’re pregnant or trying to conceive

  • Test early in pregnancy, especially for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and chlamydia.
  • STIs can affect both parent and baby, and early treatment is key.

5. If you have symptoms—or your partner does

  • Get tested immediately.
  • Symptoms might include discharge, burning, itching, pelvic pain, or sores—but many STIs are silent.

Where to Get Tested in South Africa

Testing doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive:

  • Public clinics offer free or low-cost STI testing.
  • Private GPs or gynaes can offer comprehensive screens.
  • Youth-friendly clinics and NGOs (like loveLife and Marie Stopes) provide supportive spaces.
  • At-home STI test kits are also becoming more accessible for privacy and convenience.
